ABOUT US
The Department of Soil and Water Engineering has been established with the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology in 1984 under Gujarat Agricultural University, Junagadh Campus, Junagadh, one of the four campuses of GAU S K Nagar, Gujarat.  In 2004-05, GAU were bifurcated into four universities, among which, Junagadh campus of GAU has come into existence as Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh. The Soil and Water Engineering Department under CAET, JAU, Junagadh has been renamed to Soil & Water Conservation Engineering and Department of Irrigation & Drainage Engineering has been newly established in 2017-18 with the implementations of 5th Dean’s committee recommendations approved by ICAR, New Delhi.

The main aim of the Soil & Water Conservation Engineering Department is to strengthen the Agricultural Engineering faculty to carry out teaching, research and extension activities in the fields of Soil & Water Conservation Engineering, Watershed hydrology,  Watershed Planning and Management, Ground Water Engineering, Remote Sensing and GIS, Applications of ML/AI/IoT technologies in water management and allied fields.

OBJECTIVES

  • To create and nourish a stimulating learning environment that ensures a globally relevant education based on Eternal human values.
  • To provide the intellectually and trained human resource for the public and private sector to develop the strategies of soil conservation, water conservation, augmentation of surface and groundwater resources through rainwater management and artificial groundwater recharge, groundwater management, enhancing water productivities and irrigation acreage through irrigation water management technologies.
  • To conduct the research on soil and water conservation, artificial groundwater recharge and irrigation water management strategies and fosters interactions and collaboration between faculty, researchers, industry and farmers.
  • To promote a supportive learning environment for life through implementing continuous learning programmes

Instructional farm

The CAET Instructional farm is managed Soil and Water Conservation Engineering Department has total 35 ha area, out of which 25.20 ha area is under cultivation and rest of the area is covered under road, building, nallah etc. The area under horticultural crops are 10.40 ha like mango (1.95 ha), sapota (3.85 ha), coconut (0.85), Jamun (1.40 ha), custard apple (1.25 ha) and lemon (1.10 ha). The rest of the cultivation area i.e. 14.66 ha is under field crops to produce breeder seed, certified seed and truthful seeds. Entire cultivated area of the farm is commanded by different micro irrigation systems. The farm has 2 open wells and 4 tube wells having potential of enough groundwater pumping. It has also 3 water harvesting structures from which the harvested water is used for life saving/supplemental irrigation to monsoon crops as well as few irrigations to winter crops too.  It also helps to augment the groundwater resources.
The farm owns entire series of all farm equipment/implements with 2 tractors for primary /secondary tillage operations, 2 mini tractors for sowing/inter-culturing operations, thresher/ winnower etc.
Beside this, various soil and water conservation structures such as drop inlet spillway, drop spillway, check dams, runoff- soil erosion measurement structures and well recharge structure with filter are constructed on farm for demonstration purpose. The unique demonstration on tube well recharge using overflowing water from check dam spillway through connector well technique is also demonstrated. The process is going on to develop as a fully mechanized modern farm including fully automated drip irrigation system.
The M. Tech./Ph.D.(Agril. Engg.) as well as B. Tech.(Agril. Engg.) students’ practical/ their research experiments, departmental research experiments as well as AICRP experiments are undertaken in the instructional farm.
